Next Year’s Need To Know: 2018 Predictions

Yea, Bitcoin has been all over the news lately, and you’re probably feeling left out because you don’t know what the hell it is. You just know that you should probably have bought it. Maybe you’d be rich now, sitting in Fiji sipping a Mai Tai instead of reading this. As Bitcoin and crypto-currency awareness goes up, expect banks and trading houses to jump in the game to get their cut. And then they’ll start creating proprietary crypto-currencies as Venezuela did. But where do you spend this imaginary internet money? Who cares? Just buy it for the love of gambling. There are plenty of crypto-curriences like Ripple and Tron that are dirt cheap (and you can buy them here).

The big boys like Google, Facebook, and Amazon have all been using artificial intelligence to customize your experience for a while. For example, Facebook uses AI to customize what you see in your newsfeed based on the bazillion pieces of data it has for you. The amount of data is so huge (a.k.a big data) that the computing power to analyze it just wasn’t readily available to most brands. But now it is, and companies like IBM and Amex are offering it up.  AI is going to allow companies to not just personalize for a segment, but instead, personalize on a 1-on-1 basis. And then, just when you get the perfect marketing email offering a great deal on something you love, AI will wipe out humanity.

Expect more everyday devices to be connected and “smart” as the internet of things (IoT) becomes more prevalent in everyday devices. Just think of how great your day will be when everything you own is connected to the internet. Smart toasters, smart toilet seats, smart socks, smart dish soap dispensers, smart coffee cups, smart toupees; the possibilities are endless.

Today people need computers to give them answers. So we type questions on Google. Or we ask devices like Alexa questions while we’re doing some really important things with our hands. At the same time, 2.5 quintillion bytes of data is being created every day. Somehow Google needs to sift through all that crap and get you results that are meaningful. So they’ve shifted to an algorithm that employs machine learning to analyze content and match it to a searcher’s intent. The algorithm has been changing throughout the year and will continue to improve, rewarding sites with good content that answers questions, are mobile-focused, and have enhanced metadata. Expect to see more rich snippets when you search in 2018.

What does this mean for you? If your site isn’t optimized for SEO, or your content is crap, or you didn’t understand anything I said in the last paragraph, you should call us ASAP.

Not wanting to be creatively hemmed-in by the new Tweet character limit of 280, Donald Trump will branch out to other platforms to express himself. Whether it’s Snapchat, Etsy, or FarmersOnly, look for more great content from the Don. “I find it tremendous.” – Donald Trump commenting on social media
