Sports Marketing Work

Trail Blazers Create the Court

Trail Blazers Create the Court Sports Marketing example

When Moda took over sponsorship of the Rose Garden in Portland, they wanted to do something that would be valuable for fans while getting their name out there. We helped the Trail Blazers sports marketing department create a digital tool that let fans customize and create every aspect of the court online. Fans could view and share all the entries. In the end, all the fans voted for the top three, and next season, the Blazers actually created the court at the Moda Center, where it still stands today.

Sprint Against an Olympian

Citi and Mojo PSG turned to Sanborn to come up with the digital portion of their “Rio on the Hudson” sports marketing event that celebrated the Rio Olympics. Sanborn created a way for fans to capture the Olympic spirit in a more literal, interactive and physical way by allowing them to virtually sprint against Olympic champion runner, Allyson Felix. At the finish line, a sensor captured their race time and triggered a camera to snap a photo finish. The challenger then received a branded digital photo (via text or email) that they could easily share, comparing their time with the Olympian’s.

LA Kings Battle of the Super Fans

The LA Kings and Delta wanted to create a program that celebrated and mobilized fans. We looked at this sports marketing effort as an opportunity to reward the LA Kings influencer super fans by surfacing them, acknowledging them, and then pitting them in a bracket-style contest to find out who the biggest fan was. The competition measured the number of posts, engagement, and reach for each influencer to score them in each round.

LA Kings Interactive Installation

Sanborn came up with an installation that surfaced key stats, social, and news from the Kings in an area on the Staples Center concourse where fans congregated. Contests and exclusives incentivized fans to engage with the installation.

LA Galaxy Design the Jersey

A huge part of sports marketing is the jersey and merchandising. The LA Galaxy and Herbalife came to Sanborn when they wanted to celebrate the jersey title sponsorship. We came up with an online tool for fans to photo-realistically customize their own jersey design. After fans created their design, they went into a jersey gallery where they could be voted for or shared. In the end, the top fan voted jersey became the actual 3rd kit of the LA Galaxy, worn by the team and fans.

The activation lived on the website, mobile site, and mobile app, and allowed users to vote for the player they think will shoot the basket that hits 100 points for the team. Sanborn integrated an email coupon into the voting process for those who shared the program.

Players vote for their favorite players, can see the results in real time, and are offered a McDonalds coupon if they share.

Users could also play the game at the regular distance for chances to win Blazers prizes.

LA Galaxy Pass it Forward

This multi-year campaign gave fans a chance to win by tweeting a message for their player’s charity. In the end, we had hundred’s of thousands of tweets promoting the charities. It was a sweet spot where sports marketing intersected with charity.
