PRESERVE THE MEMES. SAVE THE FUTURE.

Ya know how libraries save old newspapers? Well, we kinda do the same thing with the internet. Concerned with some things that maybe were said by a certain person who is a soon to be president of the United States (and some other creepy stuff that happened over in the UK), The Internet Archive is raising money to snapshot the entire internet before we censor ourselves to a state of brainwashed stupidity. Things may be bleak for humanity, but at least an advanced alien civilization 1 million years from now can dig up some old servers and use this valuable cultural relic to piece together that we worshipped a cat-pastry as a god and were all terrible narcissists.

DO YOU EVEN SPEAK MILLENIAL?

YouTube continues to perplex traditional media outlets because people actually watch stuff there. Trying to cash in on this crazy phenomenon, CNN recently “acquired” Beme, a Social Media startup run by influencer Casey Neistat and Tumblr’s Matt Hackett. And by “acquired,” I mean purchased and then promptly scrapped so they could get at its gooey center: Neistat’s YouTube following (and his ability to create content that strikes a chord with millenials). Neistat & co will be given free rein to work as a “startup within CNN,” but it’s yet to be seen if he can translate his audience across other new media channels, or if he’s just, like, totally selling out.

WOULD YOU LIKE ROBOT FRIES WITH THAT?

McDonald’s recently announced that new self-service kiosks will be cropping up at McDonald’s locations nationwide, citing rising labor costs and prospective minimum wage increases as key drivers for the change. While the plan is not to weed out all human cashiers, this does highlight an important question for modern businesses: how do you balance the cost of paying your employees with the cost of developing new technology to replace all those pesky employees? At least there’s a healthy archive of horror stories about working at McDonald’s to keep us occupied until we all get replaced with smart vending machines
