SwearBy Product Development

Sanborn was hired to take on the task of designing, developing, and deploying SwearBy: a unique iPhone app that tackles the issue of anonymous, untrustworthy reviews on the internet. SwearBy gives users the ability to easily connect with both friends and trusted professionals to help find the stuff they can’t live without.

Naming and Branding

As the app concept began to take shape the first challenge was figuring out what to call it. After heads-down brainstorming sessions and constant reiteration, we landed on the name SwearBy. We wanted to come up with a name that was both friendly and memorable: something that could easily be shaped into a verb – “I swear by this pair of jeans.” By keeping the name simple and straightforward and avoiding any funky spellings or abbreviations that can quickly get outdated, we hope to have created something timeless.

Once branding began, one of the most straightforward and symbolic ideas that stuck with us was the act of raising your pinky for a “pinky swear.” After a thorough process of sketching and illustrating, we came up with the elegant navy blue pinky outline with rounded corners. The icon complimented the light look and feel that would eventually translate into the design language we used in the app.

Product Planning and Architecture

Once the SwearBy brand began to come into focus, we started to flesh out every single interaction a user could have from a UI, UX, and development perspective. Working with our designers, developers, and producers in tandem, we created countless wireframes of all visible pages within SwearBy to work. The goal was to reach a simple iteration of the app quickly—which meant nailing down a core experience and picking the right tools to achieve it in a rapid development posture.

User Experience and Visual Design

After taking time to meticulously wireframe each of the 85+ screens and interactions, it was time to start skinning. The brand look and feel incorporates a palette of lots of white space with pops of navy and burnt orange. In a sea of social media apps that seem to all feel the same, we wanted to slightly elevate the look of SwearBy. By incorporating lots of white space and a mix of serif and san-serif fonts, the designs started to come together. As an iterative process, we were developing and editing our design and experience decisions hand-in-hand so we were able to test and re-configure our flows and designs on-the-go.

The design follows iOS best practices and creates a beautiful experience that feels extremely clean and elegant while still feeling approachable. As always, our developers worked with our designers to add a level of pristine polish to all interactions.

Development and Launch Support

The development process utilized an agile framework to get our hands–and the client’s hands–on testable versions of the app quickly and frequently while iterating on the experience. Our small team worked together to solve problems and move from concept, to design, to implementation at lightning speeds.

We released version 1 of SwearBy on March 28th, 2017, and are continually working to incorporate user feedback and build a better experience.
